Volunteer Participation Terms
Last updated August 5, 2026
These terms apply in addition to the general Platform Terms whenever you sign up for a shift on Neighbor Powered.
Who you're agreeing with
The organization hosting the project is responsible for supervising the work, keeping it safe, and directing what you do on-site. Neighbor Powered connects you to that organization and helps it plan and schedule — we are not the organization, and we don't supervise the work itself.
The waiver you sign at signup
Every signup includes a standard activity release covering assumption of risk, a release of claims against the hosting organization and Neighbor Powered (except for gross negligence or intentional misconduct), consent to photos/media of the activity, an agreement to follow on-site instructions, and — if you're signing for a minor — your representation that you're their parent or guardian. The exact current wording is shown to you at signup before you agree to it.
Because that agreement is signed electronically, we separately ask for your consent to sign electronically, consistent with Michigan's Uniform Electronic Transactions Act (MCL 450.831 et seq.) — your electronic signature is legally binding, the same as a handwritten one.
Phone number and SMS
A phone number is required for in-person, time-sensitive, or safety-sensitive shifts, so the hosting organization can reach you if plans change. It's optional for remote or low-risk opportunities unless the organization asks for it. If you separately opt in to text reminders, that requires its own clear consent — providing your phone number alone does not enroll you in SMS.
Checking in doesn't mean your hours are verified yet
Checking in at a project confirms you showed up. It is not, by itself, a record of completed or verified service hours — that depends on the organization confirming attendance and any check-out or supervisor approval their project requires.
