Hartland Township and Livingston County
Local resources
Who to call and where to go: township offices, reporting a problem, trash and recycling, the library, schools, parks, food help and health services. Each entry links to its official page. Hours and details change, so check there before you go.
If someone is in danger right now, call 911.
Checked on each official page Oct 13, 2026.
How to get common things done
Short guides in plain words. Each one ends with the official page where you actually do it.
Hartland Township does not own any roads. Most roads in the township belong to the Livingston County Road Commission: report a pothole or a road hazard through its online portal or, for something dangerous right now, call (517) 546-4250. M-59, US-23 and I-96 are state routes handled by MDOT, and some subdivision roads are private. The township's roads page explains which is which.
Do it on the official page:

Email the Department of Public Works at DPW@hartlandtwp.com, or call (810) 632-7498, with the nearest address or pole number. Most lights belong to DTE or Consumers Energy and the DPW passes the report to the right utility; the roundabout lights at Hartland Road are the Road Commission's.

Call Livingston County Central Dispatch's non-emergency line, (517) 546-9111, which reaches Animal Control, or file the online complaint form. The county shelter at 418 S. Highlander Way, Howell ((517) 546-2154) is where strays are taken; check there first if your own pet is missing.
Do it on the official page:

The township does not contract a hauler: every household (or its association) hires its own, and the DPW page lists the haulers that serve Hartland. Household batteries up to size D can be dropped at Township Hall during business hours. Recycle Livingston (170 Catrell Drive, Howell) is a member drop-off site with a gate fee for non-members. Paint, chemicals and other hazardous waste go to the county's appointment-only collection days. Each spring the township holds a free Large Item Clean-Up and Shredding Day for residents.

Sign up for LivCo Alerts, the county's emergency warning system (earlier sign-ups had to re-register after the October 2025 provider change). Forecasts and warnings come from the National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac office. For a water main break or a water-quality notice, the township water emergency line is (810) 632-9405, 24 hours, and notices are posted by the DPW. Power outages: DTE (800) 477-4747; Consumers Energy 800-477-5050.
